Library automation is the use of automatic and semiautomatic data processing machines to perform such traditional library activities as acquisitions, cataloguing and circulation. Library automation may thus be distinguished from related fields such as information retrieval, automatic indexing, and abstracting and automatic textual analysis. A KWIC index is an index created by sorting the words in an article or a larger collection such as a corpus, and aligning them in a format so that they can be searched alphabetically in the index.
